Voss Estate’s production is drawn from 10 hectares of prime vineyard land in Martinborough. Annette & Gary planted their 3 hectare home vineyard on the Martinborough terraces exclusively in Pinot noir in 1999. Pinot, Chardonnay & Sauvignon blanc are also sourced from the original vineyard in the Martinborough terraces planted in 1988.
About 70% of Voss Estate's production is Pinot noir with further growers supplying Riesling, additional Chardonnay & Sauvignon blanc. Of the six Pinot clones, Abel (aka DRC) predominates. Mendoza and clone 5 feature in the Chardonnay.
The vineyards are all located on an ancient alluvial river terrace made up of deep, free-draining gravel overlaid by shallow silt loam. Martinborough is about 30 m above sea level with typically around 330 mm rain in the growing season and at risk from spring frosts some years. The settled autumns, with warm days and cool nights are perfect for producing fragrant, supple and powerful Pinot noirs and elegant white wines.
