One of the great joys of living on a vineyard is watching the passing of the seasons. I am writing this in mid year. The first cold winter storms have shut down the vines. They have lost their golden cloak of autumn. They now stand bare and dormant awaiting the arrival of the pruning gang. And so the annual cycle begins again.

In these quiet moments it is time for reflection. The last twelve months have been quite tumultuous. The world economic crisis has radically altered the landscape of world business – the wine industry is no exception. At Voss we have fared relatively well compared to some. By continuing to diversify our markets locally and internationally we have maintained a steady level of sales. We also like to think that we are offering value for money – our wines continue to receive excellent reviews and are available at what we regard as a reasonable price.

The 2008 Pinot Noir has received its first review. Tim Atkin MW writing in The Observer (UK) chose it as one of his top 36 wines for the UK summer. The 2007 Pinot was awarded 94 points by wine writer Sam Kim (NZ). In addition it received a 90 point rating in Wine Enthusiast magazine (USA). We have had a great run from the USA wine media; six out of our last seven Pinots have received 90+ point ratings in prestigious magazines such as Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast.

This year from our cellar we were happy to offer the 2008 Riesling. This wine is developing beautifully. It recently received a 91 point rating from wine writer Sam Kim. NOW SOLD OUT.

For a wine maker nothing brings greater enjoyment than working with grapes from a good vintage and 2009 was one of the best. One of the longest, driest autumns on record. Vintage was an absolute pleasure. We harvested when and where we wanted. The warm days and cool nights produced near perfect fruit. We are sure these wines will be some of our best.

Pleasant drinking.

Kind regards,

Annette & Gary

Vintage 2009

The season started with a very warm settled spring. Flowering was excellent across all varieties giving us good cropping levels. Summer was variable until a very warm January accelerated the ripening. The weather was kind right up to the beginning of harvest.

We started with Sauvignon blanc on the 25th March. We are always nervous before the Sauvignon harvest as it tends to rot with any rain. However this year the fruit was in beautiful condition. The first of the Pinot noir came in off the younger vines on the 30th March. We then picked some Chardonnay on the 2nd of April and then continued with Pinot right up until the 14th April when we picked the last of the old vine fruit.

Every year there are many young winemakers from overseas (mainly French) working the harvest in Martinborough. This year we had a young French winemaker from Narbonne, Celine Santacatalina helping us. Having someone who brings a different perspective always adds to the enjoyment of harvest. She did say I spoke French with an appalling accent…..well I would wouldn’t I!

Wine Makes a Great Gift

Increasingly we are being asked to send our wines on your behalf to your friends, families and colleagues as gifts. We expect this to continue especially with Christmas coming up, followed by the summer wedding season. We are happy to enclose an appropriate gift card at no charge with these orders, with a personalised message. Alternatively we can include your own selected card if you post it to us ahead of the wine delivery. Please note your request under “Special Instructions” on our order form. Our usual terms apply – freight free in New Zealand and a minimum of six bottles. For overseas gifts allow plenty of time.

Sending Wine Overseas

For international deliveries please contact us at info@vossestate.co.nz for quotes. You can also check our Distributors page, with our up to date listings of overseas wine importers, for your nearest stockist.

Methods of Payment

In addition to our existing payment methods of credit card and cheque we would also like to offer you the option of payment direct into our bank account by internet banking. Note that this option is NOT available for on-line ordering on our website. Please make your selection on our printed form (available on request) and quote your surname as the payment reference.

Visiting Martinborough

Mail order is still the best way to source our wines as we are no longer open for cellar door sales in Martinborough. If you do come to town you can purchase our wines at the Martinborough Wine Centre (who sometimes offer tastings) or at any of the retail shops in town.
