5 stars - 94 points, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Oct 2011

The wine is elegantly expressed yet not short on attractive flavours, displaying white peach, oatmeal, citrus and subtle vanilla characters on the nose. The palate is succulent and concentrated with a flowing mouthfeel and beautifully pitched acidity providing a lingering finish. As always, this Chardonnay shows lovely proportion and style. Grapes were grown on the Martinborough Terraces (from two vineyards, three clones, vine age 17 to 21 years), hand picked, whole bunch pressed, barrel fermented in French oak (15% new), partial malolactic (25%), then matured in barrels for 10 months. At its best: now to 2018. 13.5%. Screw cap. (2009)

4.5 stars, 91-93 points, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, June 2010

It's delicate on the nose displaying citrus, peach and subtle creamy oak characters. The palate is refined showing smooth mouthfeel, fine texture and excellent acid structure. The wine is youthful and tight at this stage needing tine to show its full glory. A wine of high pedigree, so it should evolve gracefully. At its best: 2011 to 2015. (2008)

4.5 stars, Michael Cooper, Winestate, Sep - Oct 2010

Youthful, refined Martinborough wine, fully barrel-fermented, with rich, peachy, slightly mealy and biscuity flavours, showing excellent delicacy and complexity. Creamy-textured and long. (2008) - also Best of Michael Cooper's 2010 Release, Annual Issue 2010/2011

4.5 stars, Michael Coopers Buyers Guide to New Zealand Wines 2011

This powerful, richly flavoured Martinborough wine is typically fragrant and mouthfilling, with ripe grapefruit flavours, hints of nuts and butterscotch and a creamy, rounded finish. The 2008 vintage was hand-picked at two sites from vines up to 20 years old, and fermented and matured for a year in French oak barriques (25 per cent new). Youthful and refined, creamy-textured and long, it has rich, peachy, slightly mealy and biscuit flavours, showing excellent delicacy and complexity.

4.5 stars - 91 points, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Nov 2009

The fruity nose displays pineapple, peach and subtle creamy characters. It's generous and rounded on the palate with excellent creamy texture and well integrated crisp acidity. A beautifully structured and stylish Chardonnay. At its best: now to 2013. 13% Screw cap. (2007)

4.5 stars, Michael Cooper, Winestate, Mar-Apr 2009

Richly fragrant Martinborough wine, hand-picked from mature vines (15-19 years old) and barrel-fermented. Light yellow, with concentrated, ripe grapefruit and peach flavours, a subtle seasoning of oak (10% new), and a fresh, finely balanced, slightly minerally finish. Drink now or cellar. (2007) - also Best of Michael Cooper's 2009 Release, Annual Issue 2009/2010

4.5 stars, Michael Cooper, Winestate, Mar-Apr 2008

Fragrant, creamy-textured Martinborough wine, fully barrel-fermented. Mouthfilling and finely textured, with youthful, ripe, grapefruit and biscuit flavours, showing excellent complexity, harmony and richness. (2006)

4.5 stars, Michael Coopers Buyers Guide to New Zealand Wines 2009

This powerful, richly flavoured Martinborough wine is typically fragrant and mouthfilling, with ripe grapefruit flavours, hints of nuts and butterscotch and a creamy, rounded finish. The 2006 vintage was hand-picked at two sites on the Terraces and fully fermented in French oak barriques (30% new). Weighty and finely textured, it has youthful, ripe, grapefruit and biscuity flavours, showing excellent complexity, harmony and richness.

4.5 stars, Michael Cooper, Winestate, Sep-Oct 2007

Quietly classy wine with ripe stonefruit and citrus flavours and deft wood handling (100 per cent French oak-fermented, 20 per cent new). Youthful and complex, with lovely texture and harmony and a nutty, slightly buttery, long finish. Delicious drinking now onwards. (2005)

4 stars - 86 points, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Jul 2007

One of the earlier wineries to be established in Martinborough (1986), Annette and Gary Voss have produced some very exciting wines over the years. This is another beauty in the making. Made from 14 to 18-year-old vines, it is a youthful wine showing ripe tropical and citrus fruit with a touch of fresh flowers on the nose. The palate is tight but has excellent concentration and balance with a clean crisp finish. A weighty, firm wine needing food, and by the end of 2007 it should be gorgeous. At its best: end of 2007 to 2009. (2006)

4 stars, Michael Cooper, Winestate, Jul-Aug 2011

Barrel-fermented Martinborough wine, fresh and elegant, with citrusy, mealy flavours, subtle use of oak, balanced acidity and a rounded, dry finish. Not a 'showy' style, but has depth and finesse. (2009)

4.5 stars, Michael Coopers Buyers Guide to New Zealand Wines 2008

This powerful, richly flavoured Martinborough wine is typically fragrant and mouthfilling, with ripe grapefruit flavours, hints of nuts and butterscotch and a creamy, rounded finish. The 2005 vintage was hand-picked and fully fermented in French oak barriques (20 per cent new). Quietly classy, with ripe stone-fruit and citrus flavours and deft wood handling, it is youthful and complex, with lovely texture and harmony and a nutty, slightly buttery, deliciously long finish.

4 stars, Michael Cooper’s Buyer’s Guide to Wines 2006

Typically a powerful, richly flavoured Martinborough wine. Fermented and lees-aged for 10 months in French oak barriques, the 2003 vintage (4 stars) is a stylish, fragrant, mouthfilling wine with ripe grapefruit flavours, a subtle seasoning of oak, hints of nuts and butterscotch and a creamy rounded finish.

Peters Picks, Food & Beverage, Sept 2005

A wine with lots of depth which will open out as the year turns to summer. Nicely fresh for now, showing some lees which adds to the texture - and quite a dose of oak. As this wine melds and unfolds, something special will emerge. In a word: Young wine with some excellent components coming together well; lots of depth to the fruit. (2004)

TiZwine.com Tasting: July 2004

RECOMMENDED: This is a chunky Chardonnay with savoury oak behind the lemon and peach aromas, and similar characters on the palate. It leaves an impression of mealiness on the medium-length finish. (2003)

Richard Ward, Destinations Magazine

The most enjoyable Chardonnay I have tasted for some time, having put that “not another Chardonnay” mindset behind me. Definitely a food-friendly style, demonstrating newly baked bread aroma and a peach/apricot flavour. Annette Voss recommends this Chardonnay with pasta dishes, poultry and richer fish dishes such as salmon. Add rabbit to that list. (2003)

4 stars - John Saker et al., Capital Times, 3rd November 2004

The nose was a little reserved, but there was plenty of action once the glass was tipped. Even texture, powerful grapefruit and mineral characters, and tight acidity. An attractive chard. (2003)

John Saker, Capital Times, 10th September 2003

Creamy smooth, approachable, laden with almond and beeswax notes…the 2002 Voss Estate Reserve Chardonnay should find favour with plenty of punters.

4 “glasses”, The Penguin Good NZ Wine Guide 2001/2002 (Vic Williams)

Gary Voss gave this big-fruited chardonnay the full treatment. It was fermented in French oak barrels, 25% of which were new, then left sitting on the yeast cells for another 11 months. Current release 1999. There’s a suggestion of butterscotch and toasted hazelnuts behind the marmalade-like primary aromas. The flavours are mouth-fillingly rich, and the finish stylish and quite long. It works well with an old-fashioned bacon and egg pie.

4.5 stars, Michael Cooper’s Buyer’s Guide to New Zealand Wines 2004

Typically a powerful, richly flavoured Martinborough wine. Fermented and lees-aged for 10 months in French oak barriques, the 2002 vintage is softly mouthfilling, creamy and toasty, with strong, ripe peachy flavours and a good balance of fruit and oak. It’s an instantly appealing wine, already delicious.

Warren Barton, The Dominion Post, 24th August 2002

Good value, too, is the smoky, nutty 2001 reserve chardonnay.

Peter Saunders, A Guide to New Zealand Wine, 2002

Generous fruit, quite a big wine with some nice, creamy, leesy characters adding to the texture and giving the fruit a form of richness. Sound, alive Chardonnay, enjoy from now into 2004. (2001)

3 stars, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2007

A Burgundy-feel to this wine. Aromas of ripe apples with savoury notes and a touch of cream. The palate is complex and mealy with crisp acidity giving excellent structure. A food friendly wine showing good development. At its best: now to mid 2008. (2005)

Hugo Rose MW, Head of Communications & Development, Lay & Wheeler, November 2002

This is one of those wines that gives even up-market burgundy a good pacing. The wine is very long in the mouth, delivering complex spice and fruit notes leading to a sleek dry finish. Here oak is brilliantly harmonised, this is a full-flavoured yet refined wine, a shining example of New Zealand chardonnay. (2001)
